Burnsville sits on a bluff overlooking the Minnesota River in Dakota County, an area inhabited long before European American settlement. European-descended settlers began arriving in the early 1850s, and the community was formally established in 1858. The city takes its name from William Byrnes, an early Irish settler and landowner, although variations in the spelling of his surname eventually resulted in the name Burnsville. Agriculture dominated the local economy for decades, and many of the community’s early residents were Irish farmers.

Burnsville remained predominantly rural well into the twentieth century. In 1960, its population was only about 2,700, but suburban expansion from Minneapolis and St. Paul quickly transformed the landscape. Burnsville officially incorporated as a city in 1964. Improved highway connections, new residential neighborhoods, commercial development, and proximity to major Twin Cities employment centers helped fuel rapid population growth. Today, Burnsville has more than 60,000 residents and combines residential neighborhoods with more than 3,300 acres of parks and wildlife refuge lands, commercial areas, cultural destinations, and outdoor recreation. Its modern downtown district is known as the Heart of the City. More historical and community information is available from the City of Burnsville and Wikipedia’s Burnsville, Minnesota page.
