Chaska’s history is closely connected to the Minnesota River and the Indigenous peoples who lived in the region long before European American settlement. Ancient mounds in what is now City Square indicate early habitation, while the Dakota later became the primary Indigenous nation in the surrounding Big Woods region. Recorded local history dates to the eighteenth century, and French Canadian fur traders were active in the area during the early nineteenth century. Following the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux in 1851, the area then known as Little Rapids was opened to settlement. Thomas Andrew Holmes claimed land for a townsite that year, and the name Chaska derives from a Dakota word traditionally given as a name to a first-born male child.

Chaska was incorporated as a village in 1871 and became a city in 1891. Abundant clay deposits supported a thriving brickmaking industry beginning in the nineteenth century, while riverboats and later railroads connected local products with larger markets. Agricultural processing, flour milling, butter production, and other industries followed. Chaska remained relatively small through the first half of the twentieth century before Twin Cities suburban growth reached the community. The Jonathan New Town development, introduced during the 1960s, became especially important to its expansion. Today, Chaska is the Carver County seat and combines historic neighborhoods with substantial residential and commercial development. Additional information is available from the City of Chaska and Wikipedia’s Chaska, Minnesota page.
