Established in 1853, Blue Earth County boasts a rich history that reflects the broader narrative of Minnesota’s development. Originally inhabited by the Dakota people, the area was explored by Frenchman Pierre-Charles Le Sueur in the late 17th century. He was drawn to the region by the distinctive blue-green clay along the riverbanks, mistakenly believing it contained copper. This clay inspired the name “Blue Earth.” The county played a significant role during the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, a pivotal event in Minnesota’s history. Today, Blue Earth County is home to approximately 69,100 residents and encompasses the city of Mankato, a hub for education and culture. ​
